Tokyo, Japan: Tokyo Station

Tokyo Station

If you think Tokyo Station, which turns a century old come 2014, is huge above ground, it is even bigger underground. Tokyo Station connects the Shinkansen (high speed bullet train), railway, metro and intercity bus, making it one of the busiest terminal stations in Japan. No surprises, it is easy to get lost, or more aptly, distracted, in the labyrinth of underground passageways.

On top of all these, now it even integrates a hotel!

Maple trees line the streets outside the station, and boy, are the leaves huge!

I could watch this change for a day (maybe just half).

There were many, many shops...

...but I was more enamored with departmental store basements (the food section!).

As with EVERY train station in Tokyo, there's bound to be lockers, much less in Tokyo Station (since it connects cities). And when even hundreds of lockers are taken, there's always the trusty baggage storage (be warned: the queue can get very long!).

Tokyo, Japan: Tsukiji Fish Market

Expect nothing but the freshest of sushi at the restaurants located right outside the Tsukiji Fish Market - afterall, the fish does come from the largest wholesale seafood market in Japan, if not the world.

Tsukiji is located in Central Tokyo and the walk from the Subway station (the Tsukiji Station or Tsukiji Shijo Station) offers some interesting sights.

It's hard to wake up early when it's so cold outside and you know you'd miss the Tuna Auctions anyway.
The Tuna Auctions at Tsukiji are definitely not-to-be-missed but they can be real early (before 5 am), restricted (to 120 people daily), hard to understand (unless you are extremely proficient in Japanese), and may not be available all year round (at least not during the peak Winter season, when I visited), so do check before you go!
Regardless, visiting in the late morning helps to avoid the morning crowd and offers a different side of Tsukiji:

After visiting the Fish Market, it's time for a well-deserved sushi breakfast.

Apart from the Fish Market, it is easy to forget that Tsukiji actually has designated areas for other food produce. It's much like the foodie's version of Bangkok's Chatuchak Market.

Since Tsukiji is pretty close to Ginza, Tokyo's premier shopping district, it makes sense to drop by right after some sushi (it's possible to walk there - I did - just make sure you've got your bearings right).

Tokyo, Japan: Tokyo After Dark

As with any other cosmopolitan city, Tokyo is literally bustling with life around the clock. After dark, head to Shibuya for some people-watching or Roppongi for a touch of class.

Prepare to brave the insane crowd at The Great Shibuya Crossing - I stand in awe at how fast the crowd can gather and disperse

Starbucks offers a brief respite from the hustle.

Don't forget to say Hi to Hachiko of 'Hachi: A Dog's Tale' fame. He is now a designated meeting spot.

And while the night is still young, escape to the bright lights of Roppongi.

Roppongi is a very classy (and romantic) district, dolled up with the Christmas lights.

I had a 'nut-cracking' good winter in Tokyo, and I hope you did, too, wherever you were.
