Osaka, Japan: Shitennoji Temple and Flea Market

Who says drain covers can't be functional and pretty? And where can you find a temple that runs flea markets on its grounds?

Here's one I know of - Shitennoji Temple. A flea market has been held every 21st and 22nd of the month for the last 200 years. I just learnt this as I'm researching for this post and I relish my good fortune to be at the right place at the right time.
Shitennoji (四天王寺, Shitennōji) is one of Japan's oldest temples and the first ever to be built by the state. It was founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku, who supported the introduction of Buddhism into Japan. Although the temple's buildings burned down several times throughout the centuries, they were always carefully reconstructed to reflect the original 6th century design. Source

A temple is a place of worship, yet I love how the Shitennoji Temple has been bringing people together, for the past 200 years no less, while retaining the sanctity of the place.

  1. Good post and great photos! :) Shitennoji is the best temple in Osaka, for sure, but have you been to Sumiyoshi Shrine? That place is also amazing!

  2. Thanks! I didn't go to the Sumiyoshi Shrine, but when I return to Osaka, I'll definitely include it in my list of must-visits! Thanks for the recommendation!
