Paris, France: Île de la Cité (Crypte Archeologique and Notre Dame)

Apart from the Conciergerie and Sainte-Chapelle, two other must-visit places on Île de la Cité, situated at the heart of Paris, are Crypte Archeologique and Notre Dame, which are right beside each other.

Entry into Notre Dame (yes, where the Hunchback resided) is free but as there are baggage checks, the queue can get insane. As if queuing once was not enough, I had to queue even longer to take the tour of Notre Dame, which allows visitors to walk right round the top of the cathedral, offering close-ups of the gargoyles and breathtaking views of the city. Despite the waits and the climb, a visit to Notre Dame (and Paris) is well worth it.

Before I read about the Crypte, I thought it was an underground city or water store, but it turns out to be a rather recent creation. During the mid 1960s to early 1970s, excavations were conducted in the square right in front of Notre Dame to build a carpark and the Crypte was created in 1974 and used to store archaeological remains.

Learn a bit about the history but not exactly worth a visit without the Paris Museum Pass

Notre Dame - A must-visit in Paris. Nothing much to add to that. (Oh and the Organ is pretty cool too).

Tip: When queuing to enter the cathedral or for the Tour, grab a cup of coffee or Nutella crepe - it may take a while! And you'd need it for the 422 steps up the top!

Building work on Notre Dame began around 1163 and at the beginning of the 13th century it was the largest cathedral in France. The towers from the main facade of this masterpiece of Gothic art: visitors can climb the 422 steps to the upper room in the north tower, the Galarie des Chimeres - the fruit of 19th century restoration work, and the belfry with its huge bell, bringing to mind Victor Hugo's famous novel. The belfry also offers one of the best panoramic views over the heart of Paris.
