Scotland has several castles, but none as famous and complete (albeit rebuilt and refurbished) as the Edinburgh Castle.
The first time I reached the castle too late and just had time for some ice-cream and peeking. I didn't expect to make it inside. But as things turned out, my friends who travelled separately didn't make it to the castle that day too after some "intense" climbing up Arthur's Seat! So the next day, we made it to the castle together, enroute to the Scottish Highlands.
You can't miss the ice-cream truck! It's right outside the Castle grounds, before ticketing.
For a while it felt like I was at Universal Studios (think Shrek).
That was as far as I got on my first attempt, walking along the Royal Mile from Holyrood Palace. Then the next day, we parked near the castle and had to climb up these steps to the Castle.
The castle on Castle Rock, is one of three places to get a panoramic view of the city.
There are free guided tours around the Castle. Highly recommended since it's much better than wandering around on your own. And it's free!
You can also queue to see the Scottish Crown Jewels.
There are also museums with tons of artefacts on display, such as this Naval Cutlass Exercise, recruitment posters and satirical art pieces.
Saint Margaret's Chapel is the smallest building on the castle. It's also part of the original castle that's still standing.
There's also dog cemetery.
The small garden below has been used since Queen Victoria's reign as a burial place for regimental mascots and officers' dogs.
Someone had a train to catch and so we grabbed lunch at one of the restaurants around the Castle - Castle Arms. The fish and chips (with garlicky fries on request) was a good, generous serving.
