Kobe, Japan: Kitano-Cho Houses

Singapore has its Peranakan shophouses, San Francisco has its Victorian houses, well, Kobe has its Kitano-cho Ijinkan (meaning foreign) Houses in the port-city. Formerly foreign diplomatic or merchantile residences from the Meiji to Taisho eras, today, while some remain as residences, others serve as museums, restaurants, or more generally, tourist attractions. Expect to pay a nominal admission fee for entry to attractions like the England House, Uroko House, Denmark House and Weathercock House.

The place is also very picturesque so I'm not surprised to see the chapel and the many bridal agencies.

And some artistes too!

You just walk around, get lost a little, follow the crowd and see where it brings you to. Lovely.

They sure look pretty in the day and elude a different air at night - especially come Christmas time!

Access: Sannomiya or Shin-Kobe Stations (10-15 min walk)

NB: Kobe is also famed for its beef. But too bad, I don't eat beef.
