We checked out the Nara Visitor's Centre at the train station for up-to-date insider scoop on Nara. There are many experiences for free, tourists or otherwise. Coincidentally, it was the 2nd Tuesday of the month, so we got to try on a kimono for free! (I doubt you can wear it out, it's Nara, not Kyoto so there's hardly anyone in kimonos on the streets anyway. I'm satisfied just trying it on!)
We looked through a catalog of donated kimonos. There were so many sets available (unless someone is already wearing it), and the friendly obachans will help you put it on and even do up your hair.
There is an optional donation for the cost of dry cleaning. We did that and we also went for the tea ceremony. Which was really quite authentic because it was in an entirely different area and you had to crawl through an opening to get into the "tea house".

Nara itself is very walkable (and deers!). That's the Nara City Information Center.
I chose a vintage set.
