Kyoto, Japan: Arashiyama Bamboo Grove

Kyoto Japan

I didn't get to visit the Arashiyama bamboo grove during my previous trip. However, if it's raining, as it did when we visited, I'm not sure it's worth visiting. It's hard to appreciate the place when you are drenched and photos are hard to take with many umbrellas (including our own) getting in the way.

We used our 3-day Kansai Pass to get to and around Nara/Kyoto/Kobe and it also covered the bus rides from the train station to the bamboo grove.

As with all tourist attractions, there is a shopping street closer to the train station. There were craft and gift shops. The highlight was... in a chopstick shop, I found out that Arashiyama had monkeys! Granted I actually mistook it for the Snow Monkey Park in Yudanaka, Nagano, it was still worth the climb in the rain (see upcoming post). The weather didn't bother the monkeys as much as it did for me.

"Pretty cherry blossoms magically bloom when the umbrella gets wet" - pretty and looks sturdy, but bulky to bring around when travelling.

Much better souvenir idea: personalised embroidered handkerchiefs!
