Undoubtedly, the most popular attraction in Arashiyama has to be the bamboo grove, but do you know that there is also a monkey park? I didn't either until I saw some Arashiyama-themed chopsticks in a shop on the shopping street.
Don't stare at the monkeys in the eye.
Don't touch the monkeys.
Don't feed them outside.
Don't take a picture on the way.
Please take a distance more 3m with Monkeys.
I take the advice seriously. We know how rowdy monkeys can get at the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve.
Visitors give Monkey's Feeds only in the Rest Room.
You can't bring Monkey's Feeds.
Be careful during your climb up if it is raining. It gets slippery and there are many steps (it is up on the mountain, so no surprise). The upside is that the park was not crowded either on the climb up or at the top. If the weather gets bad, the park may be closed for safety.
Avoid taking photos on the way - just focus on climbing up and down the stairs!
Based on what I deduce from the map, the climb up and down takes 20 min each way, and the whole park should take about 1 hour (i.e. 20 min to rest at the top).
Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama
From the entrance of the park, you walk about 20 min on a mountain path before reaching the observation platform. Once there, you can have a rest at the visitor's house. You can also enjoy the beautiful view on Kyoto city (note: not from inside the house).
At present, there are about 130 Japanese monkeys at Arashiyama Monkey Park. They are fed in front of the observation platform and live around this central place. Since the feeding area is located just in front of the visitor;s house, many monkeys gather there at feeding time. From inside the house, you can feed the monkeys.
Please put the plastic bags into your bag, or leave them at the entrance. The monkeys might take them away.
That many steps.
Emo and wet (sounds like me)
From inside
From outside
Indeed, there is a birdeye's view of Kyoto. Better if it's a clear day.
All good things have to come to an end. It was fun (I got back down safely), and more so because it was unexpected!
