See the contrasting faces of Taipei's oldest district - sip some herbal tea in the day and savor some snake soup at night.
Wanhua District in Taipei used to be called Bangka or Monga. If it sounds familiar, there's a movie Monga based on this exact district set in 1980s.
At Longshan Temple Station, there's even an underground shopping arcade but I prefer peeking into the alleys aboveground along Herbal Lane.
Fancy some Herbal Tea?
When night falls, the other side of Wanhua springs to life.
Fancy some snake soup?
Some turtle soup?
Or a massage?
More on the Monga District - the Longshan Temple and Bopiliao.

I used to live in this district and the image of snake alley looks familiar. Most visitors wanted to visit this market but we really didn't enjoy it after a couple of visits.
ReplyDeleteI stopped at one of the snake store at HuaXi night market to taste their snake soup. It was fun experience!
ReplyDeleteYes it is, I highly recommend it! Thanks for dropping by :)
ReplyDeleteYup I photograph and blog so it brings back the good memories! There's a problem with the link somehow: it should be http://cxianliu.wordpress.com/2014/10/13/taipei-a-mesmerizing-city/
ReplyDeleteYou did? That's awesome! Yeah it seemed rather touristy for me, not somewhere you would visit all the time...
ReplyDeleteWow, I... didn't have the guts... how does it taste like? Chicken? Turtle? It will forever remain a mystery to me...
ReplyDeleteI just drank the soup, didn't eat meat since I am a vegetarian. I got the guts after the owner of the snake store told me that the snake soup could smoothen my skin. :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks.
ReplyDeleteHaha interesting, I totally understand where you are coming from. Things we do in the name of beauty!
