Taipei, Taiwan: Wanhua/ Monga District

See the contrasting faces of Taipei's oldest district - sip some herbal tea in the day and savor some snake soup at night.

Wanhua District in Taipei used to be called Bangka or Monga. If it sounds familiar, there's a movie Monga based on this exact district set in 1980s.

At Longshan Temple Station, there's even an underground shopping arcade but I prefer peeking into the alleys aboveground along Herbal Lane.

  3. I used to live in this district and the image of snake alley looks familiar. Most visitors wanted to visit this market but we really didn't enjoy it after a couple of visits.

  7. You did? That's awesome! Yeah it seemed rather touristy for me, not somewhere you would visit all the time...

  8. Wow, I... didn't have the guts... how does it taste like? Chicken? Turtle? It will forever remain a mystery to me...

  9. I just drank the soup, didn't eat meat since I am a vegetarian. I got the guts after the owner of the snake store told me that the snake soup could smoothen my skin. :-)
